First Inter-American Democracy Conference: Democratic Governance and Effective Policy Development

February 27 – 28, 2014 Hyatt Regency Hotel, Coral Gables, FL

The State of Florida’s Legislature and the Center for Democracy and Good Governance of the Institute for Public Management and Community Service of Florida International University will be organizing the First Annual Inter-American Democracy Conference on Democratic Governance and Effective Policy Development.

The purpose of the Conference is to interchange ideas and experiences for the building and strengthening of democracy in the Americas. Within this context, the Conference will analyze the role played by national and regional legislative bodies, political parties and members of the executive branch in the strengthening of democratic governance. Particular attention will be given to issues regarding “democratic backsliding” in the hemisphere.

Distinguished panelists from Latin America, the United States and other countries will share their experiences at the Conference. Including keynote presentations by Dr. Marcelo Giugale, Sector Director for Poverty Reduction & Economic Management, Africa Region at The World Bank; as well as, from the Executive Director of the Ibero-American Organization, Dr. Enrique Iglesias.

The Conference will also address topics relating to stability and economic growth, which are fundamental to the commercial interchange between Florida and the region. Some of the topics to be addressed are: Democracy and development: the role of political leadership in reducing inequality; the Role of Political Leadership in Strengthening Democratic Institutions (judicial reforms, electoral reforms, freedom of the press); Democratic Accountability in Service Delivery; and Citizen Participation Initiatives. Other topics to be considered include: Political leadership and transparency; Political leadership and environmental initiatives (innovation, good practices); and Millennium Development Goals and the role of political leadership in achieving them.

The development and participation in the Conference will contribute to the debate in regards to the importance of strengthening governability and democratic practices in our hemisphere. These results will be presented and discussed in regional and local seminars that will be organized by the Center for Democracy and Good Governance of FIU throughout the year.
