The Center for Democracy and Good Governance of the Institute for Public Management and Community Service (IPMCS) of Florida International University has, for many years, been actively engaged in efforts in many parts of the world to promote good governance, the building and strengthening of democratic institutions and the promotion of democratic values. The Center has been particularly active in Latin America because of the considerable importance of that region as a center of economic activity for not only South Florida, but the entire State of Florida. In that regard, the efforts of the Center are built on the belief that the encouragement of stable democracies in Latin America is essential to the economic development of both the State and the hemisphere through the creating of an environment in which important commercial relationships can be built and, even more importantly, sustained.

The Cuba Democracy Initiative represents an important step, initiated with the considerable and strong support of the South Florida legislative delegation, to create a new and more fertile environment for the encouragement and building of commercial relationships between the State of Florida generally, South Florida in particular, and the citizens of Cuba. As part of this initiative, the Center for Democracy and Good Governance has begun to take steps to identify a select group of young and entrepreneurial Cuban leaders from various sectors of Cuban society to participate in what we anticipate will become an annual seminar for young Cuban leaders. The first seminar will occur in Miami and Tallahassee, Florida during the week of January 24-29, 2016
